Composed in 2019, this motet is scored for SATB a capella choir (with divisi) and features a demi-chorus passage. The music combines expressive lyrical melodies with a polyphonic texture and the frequent harmonic twists and explorations intensify the atmosphere. 'Locus Iste' was composed in response to Anton Bruckner's famous setting of this text. Like Bruckner’s motet, ‘Locus Iste’ begins in C, but with the melody and harmony reimagined. Those familiar with the Bruckner motet will recognise the musical cameos imbedded in this work, which clearly pays homage to Bruckner's mastery. Mostly SATB with some small passages of divisi, this a capella motet is suitable for an advanced choir. This setting of the Lord's Prayer in Latin is based on the Pater Noster chant and is set for SATB choir with some divisi within parts. and follows the natural rhythmic flow and contour of the chant. The music follows the natural rhythmic ebb and flow of the chant and combined with the gentle harmonies, is a work that captures the devotional and reflective nature of this prayer. This motet was composed in response to Duruflé’s ‘Ubi Caritas’ and is of moderate difficulty.

Composed between 2018 and 2020, the Missa Brevis is an a cappella setting of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus/Benedictus and Agnus Dei texts from the ordinary of the Mass for SSAATTBB choir. Stylistically the music is a fusion of early music techniques with a contemporary harmonic palette, creating a sacred aesthetic that at times is meditative and at others, intense. With an extended pitch range, intricate textures and complex harmonies, this work is suitable for an advanced choir. The work can be purchased in its entirety or as separate movements.

The ‘Kyrie’ from the Missa Brevis follows the traditional three-fold nature of the text, with the opening and ending sections possessing a modern harmonic aesthetic whilst the middle ‘Christe eleison’ section begins in a style reflective of Palestrina.

Based on the Gloria III (X-XI Century) plainchant from the Liber Usualis, this movement is a passionate setting of the Gloria text, beginning darkly and gradually opening out to lightness. This complex and substantial movement features solo passages, intricate harmonies and lyrical melodies, making it an excellent choice as part of a concert repertoire as well as inclusion within a service.

This is a single movement setting of the Sanctus and Benedictus texts and features a short, soprano solo set high in the tessitura. The opening is harmonically reminiscent of impressionistic style, but as the movement progresses, elements of early music are fused into a contemporary harmonic palette to create a setting that is musically colourful and rich.

This reflective final movement was performed by the Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Choir in May 2019 and a recording of this performance is available on the listening page. The movement begins with a solo tenor chant and the middle section’s sustained dissonances create musical tension and contribute towards an intense sacred aesthetic.
