A Child is Born in Bethlehem

‘A Child is Born in Bethlehem’ is an adaption of the original Gregorian chant and text and is arranged for SSA choir with piano accompaniment. The carol was revised in 2021 and begins with the melody sung in unison, with division of parts in verses two and three. The early-music atmosphere is captured through techniques such as drone and canon as well the Dorian mode melody. The opening melody is simple, and this offers an opportunity to combine developing choirs with more advanced singers (or choirs) to help with the more challenging part writing in verses two and three.

Behold the Star

Words and music by Heather Percy, this carol features a lyrical melody over the well known I – vi – IV – V chord progression with some extra added harmonic and rhythmic twists to keep everyone on their toes. Composed for two-part treble choir with piano accompaniment, it begins in unison and builds to a climax in the last verse with the addition of a descant and a stride style bass part in the piano accompaniment. There is a broad pitch range in the melody. This is a majestic and impressive carol, well suited to a formal carol service or concert.

The Wise Men of the East

A new Christmas Carol by Heather Percy that combines unison and two-part singing with piano accompaniment.  The frequent harmonic shifts to unexpected keys and lyrical melody help relay the mystique of the Wise Men’s journey to Bethlehem. This Carol contrasts greatly with traditional Christmas carols and will a great addition to your Christmas/end of year concert. There are some musical challenges, particularly in the refrain, making this Carol more suited to a more experienced treble choir.

Wartime Christmas

Music by Heather Percy and lyrics by Joyce Kilmer. Alfred Joyce Kilmer was an American poet who fought in France during the Great War. He was killed by a sniper’s bullet during the Second Battle of Marne in 1918. Kilmer’s poems have often been described as too sentimental, yet ‘Wartime Christmas’ truly captures both the futility of war as well as what Christmas is about – love and home. ‘Wartime Christmas’ is set for both unison choir and SA choir.
