Ne Les Oublions Jamais

Commissioned by Birralee Voices for their 2017 Voices from the Trenches Choral Festival, ‘Ne Les Oublions Jamais’ is dedicated to the Australian’s who fought on the Somme in the Great War.   There are influences from the English Pastoral style of the turn of the 20th century, and dissonance and angular melodies pervade the ‘battle scene’.

The Garden of Love

“The Garden of Love,” by the English poet William Blake (1757–1827) is one of the lyrics contained in his collection titled Songs of Experience. “The Garden of Love” opens with images of beauty and a garden, with its flowers, that was once enjoyed by the poet as a child.  The poem then departs from this image of innocence as he sees the garden decay,  and the flowers that once grew have since been replaced by graves and tombstones. The music for this evocative and emotive poem is gently dissonant, with lyrical melodies, modal tonality,  sudden shifts in key and is accompanied by piano.
